RESUMEN

Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by elevated blood glucose levels, posing significant health risks such as cardiovascular disease, and nerve, kidney, and eye damage. Effective management of blood glucose is essential for individuals with diabetes to mitigate these risks. This study introduces the Glu-Ensemble, a deep learning framework designed for precise blood glucose forecasting in patients with type 2 diabetes. Unlike other predictive models, Glu-Ensemble addresses challenges related to small sample sizes, data quality issues, reliance on strict statistical assumptions, and the complexity of models. It enhances prediction accuracy and model generalizability by utilizing larger datasets and reduces bias inherent in many predictive models. The framework's unified approach, as opposed to patient-specific models, eliminates the need for initial calibration time, facilitating immediate blood glucose predictions for new patients. The obtained results indicate that Glu-Ensemble surpasses traditional methods in accuracy, as measured by root mean square error, mean absolute error, and error grid analysis. The Glu-Ensemble framework emerges as a promising tool for blood glucose level prediction in type 2 diabetes patients, warranting further investigation in clinical settings for its practical application.

This study conducted phenotypic evaluations on a wheat F3 population derived from 155 F2 plants. Traits related to seed color, including chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, carotenoid, anthocyanin, L*, a*, and b*, were assessed, revealing highly significant correlations among various traits. Genotyping using 81,587 SNP markers resulted in 3969 high-quality markers, revealing a genome-wide distribution with varying densities across chromosomes. A genome-wide association study using fixed and random model circulating probability unification (FarmCPU) and Bayesian-information and linkage-disequilibrium iteratively nested keyway (BLINK) identified 11 significant marker-trait associations (MTAs) associated with L*, a*, and b*, and chromosomal distribution patterns revealed predominant locations on chromosomes 2A, 2B, and 4B. A comprehensive annotation uncovered 69 genes within the genomic vicinity of each MTA, providing potential functional insights. Gene expression analysis during seed development identified greater than 2-fold increases or decreases in expression in colored wheat for 16 of 69 genes. Among these, eight genes, including transcription factors and genes related to flavonoid and ubiquitination pathways, exhibited distinct expression patterns during seed development, providing further approaches for exploring seed coloration. This comprehensive exploration expands our understanding of the genetic basis of seed color and paves the way for informed discussions on the molecular intricacies contributing to this phenotypic trait.

RESUMEN

We developed an attention model to predict future adverse glycemic events 30 min in advance based on the observation of past glycemic values over a 35 min period. The proposed model effectively encodes insulin administration and meal intake time using Time2Vec (T2V) for glucose prediction. The proposed impartial feature selection algorithm is designed to distribute rewards proportionally according to agent contributions. Agent contributions are calculated by a step-by-step negation of updated agents. Thus, the proposed feature selection algorithm optimizes features from electronic medical records to improve performance. For evaluation, we collected continuous glucose monitoring data from 102 patients with type 2 diabetes admitted to Cheonan Hospital, Soonchunhyang University. Using our proposed model, we achieved F1-scores of 89.0%, 60.6%, and 89.8% for normoglycemia, hypoglycemia, and hyperglycemia, respectively.

Purpose: Sirolimus has emerged as a safe and effective treatment for complicated lymphatic malformations (LMs). We aim to prove the effectiveness and safety of sirolimus as a therapeutic option for patients with complicated LMs. Methods: Fifty-eight patients with complicated LMs treated with sirolimus for at least 6 months at multicenter between July 2018 and January 2023 were enrolled. All patients were administered oral sirolimus starting at 0.8 mg/m2 every 12 hours, with target serum concentration levels of 8-15 ng/mL. Evaluation for clinical symptoms and LMs volume on MRI were reviewed to assess treatment response and toxicities. Evaluation of disease response was divided into 3 values: complete response, partial response (significant, moderate, and modest), and progressive disease. Results: The median age at the initiation of sirolimus treatment was 6.0 years (range, 1 month-26.7 years). The median duration of treatment was 2.0 years (range, 6 months-4.4 years). The most common lesions were head and neck (25 of 58, 43.1%). Forty-six patients (79.3%) demonstrated a reduction in LMs volume on MRI or improvement of clinical symptoms including 2 complete responses. The young age group and the patients who underwent few prior therapies showed better responses. None of the patients had toxicities attributable to sirolimus with a Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events grade of ≥3. Conclusion: Oral sirolimus treatment brought a successful outcome without severe adverse effects. It could be the first-line therapy, especially for the young age group of complicated LMs, and an additional option for refractory lesions that did not respond to conventional treatment.

Background: Salinity is a major abiotic stress that prevents normal plant growth and development, ultimately reducing crop productivity. This study investigated the effects of salinity stress on two wheat lines: PL1 (wild type) and PL6 (mutant line generated through gamma irradiation of PL1). Results: The salinity treatment was carried out with a solution consisting of a total volume of 200 mL containing 150 mM NaCl. Salinity stress negatively impacted germination and plant growth in both lines, but PL6 exhibited higher tolerance. PL6 showed lower Na+ accumulation and higher K+ levels, indicating better ion homeostasis. Genome-wide transcriptomic analysis revealed distinct gene expression patterns between PL1 and PL6 under salt stress, resulting in notable phenotypic differences. Gene ontology analysis revealed positive correlations between salt stress and defense response, glutathione metabolism, peroxidase activity, and reactive oxygen species metabolic processes, highlighting the importance of antioxidant activities in salt tolerance. Additionally, hormone-related genes, transcription factors, and protein kinases showed differential expression, suggesting their roles in the differential salt stress response. Enrichment of pathways related to flavonoid biosynthesis and secondary metabolite biosynthesis in PL6 may contribute to its enhanced antioxidant activities. Furthermore, differentially expressed genes associated with the circadian clock system, cytoskeleton organization, and cell wall organization shed light on the plant's response to salt stress. Conclusions: Understanding these mechanisms is crucial for developing stress-tolerant crop varieties, improving agricultural practices, and breeding salt-resistant crops to enhance global food production and address food security challenges.

BACKGROUND: Bulky or multiple lymph node (LN) metastases are associated with poor prognosis in cervical cancer, and the size or number of LN metastases is not yet reflected in the staging system and therapeutic strategy. Although the therapeutic effects of surgical resection of bulky LNs before standard treatment have been reported in several retrospective studies, well-planned randomized clinical studies are lacking. Therefore, the aim of the Korean Gynecologic Oncology Group (KGOG) 1047/DEBULK trial is to investigate whether the debulking surgery of bulky or multiple LNs prior to concurrent chemoradiation therapy (CCRT) improves the survival rate of patients with cervical cancer IIICr diagnosed by imaging tests. METHODS: The KGOG 1047/DEBULK trial is a phase III, multicenter, randomized clinical trial involving patients with bulky or multiple LN metastases in cervical cancer IIICr. This study will include patients with a short-axis diameter of a pelvic or para-aortic LN ≥2 cm or ≥3 LNs with a short-axis diameter ≥1 cm and for whom CCRT is planned. The treatment arms will be randomly allocated in a 1:1 ratio to either receive CCRT (control arm) or undergo surgical debulking of bulky or multiple LNs before CCRT (experimental arm). CCRT consists of extended-field external beam radiotherapy/pelvic radiotherapy, brachytherapy and LN boost, and weekly chemotherapy with cisplatin (40 mg/m²), 4-6 times administered intravenously. The primary endpoint will be 3-year progression-free survival rate. The secondary endpoints will be 3-year overall survival rate, treatment-related complications, and accuracy of radiological diagnosis of bulky or multiple LNs. High temperatures can significantly impact wheat growth and grain yields during the grain-filling stage. In this study, we identified genes that respond to high-temperature stress during the grain-filling stage. We also identified and characterized 24 novel genes of the DOG1 gene family in hexaploid wheat. Motif analysis and conserved domain search revealed substantial similarities among TaDOG1 family members. Phylogenetic analysis demonstrated the evolutionary conservation of the TaDOG1 family across various plant species. Tissue-specific expression profiling indicated consistent patterns, with TaDOG1 genes predominantly expressed in stem tissues. Only TaDOG1-1 exhibited enhanced expression, particularly during hard dough and ripening stages. TaDOG1-1 and TaDOG1-7 exhibited increased expression under heat stress during the grain-filling stage, indicating their heat-responsive nature. Cis-element analysis revealed potential regulatory motifs, suggesting the involvement of TaDOG1-1 and TaDOG1-7 in stress tolerance mechanisms. Yeast two-hybrid screening revealed interacting proteins, including stress-responsive and grain development-associated proteins. To understand the biological function, we overexpressed TaDOG1-1 in Arabidopsis plants and observed enhanced thermotolerance under basal heat stress. Under heat stress, the transgenic plants exhibited increased biomass and elevated expression levels of heat-responsive genes. Furthermore, TaDOG1-1-overexpressing plants showed improved survival rates under soil heat stress, along with a greater accumulation of antioxidant enzymes in leaves. In this study, the identification and functions of the DOG1 gene family provide valuable insights for developing genetic engineering strategies aimed at improving wheat yield under high-temperature stress.

The Korean Society of Gynecologic Oncology (KSGO) had been making an effort to standardize and enhance the quality of domestic uterine corpus cancer treatment by developing updated clinical practice guidelines in 2021. The KSGO revised the guidelines based on a literature search using 4 key elements: Population, Intervention, Comparison, and Outcome framework. These elements include the evaluation of the efficacy and safety of immune checkpoint inhibitor treatment in recurrent/advanced endometrial cancer patients who have failed platinum-based chemotherapy, as well as the effect of combined treatment with trastuzumab in patients with HER2/neu-positive endometrial cancer. Additionally, the guideline assessed the efficacy and safety of omitting lymph node dissection in low-risk endometrial cancer patients, investigated the effect of sentinel lymph node mapping in early-stage endometrial cancer surgery, addressed the outcome of chemoradiation therapy as a postoperative treatment in patients with advanced (stage III-IVA) endometrial cancer, and explored the impact of initial treatment with immune checkpoint inhibitors on survival in patients with advanced or recurrent endometrial cancer patients.

The development of organic-based optoelectronic technologies for the indoor Internet of Things market, which relies on ambient energy sources, has increased, with organic photovoltaics (OPVs) and photodetectors (OPDs) considered promising candidates for sustainable indoor electronic devices. However, the manufacturing processes of standalone OPVs and OPDs can be complex and costly, resulting in high production costs and limited scalability, thus limiting their use in a wide range of indoor applications. This study uses a multi-component photoactive structure to develop a self-powering dual-functional sensory device with effective energy harvesting and sensing capabilities. The optimized device demonstrates improved free-charge generation yield by quantifying charge carrier dynamics, with a high output power density of over 81 and 76 µW cm-2 for rigid and flexible OPVs under indoor conditions (LED 1000 lx (5200 K)). Furthermore, a single-pixel image sensor is demonstrated as a feasible prototype for practical indoor operating in commercial settings by leveraging the excellent OPD performance with a linear dynamic range of over 130 dB in photovoltaic mode (no external bias). This apparatus with high-performance OPV-OPD characteristics provides a roadmap for further exploration of the potential, which can lead to synergistic effects for practical multifunctional applications in the real world by their mutual relevance.

Purpose: Hiatal hernia in children is a rare condition, and there is limited knowledge available about the disease itself. There is currently no agreement or consensus on the treatment of hiatal hernia in the pediatric population due to lack of evidence. In this study, we were to assess our experience with hiatal hernia, including the characteristics of our patients, surgical outcomes, and factors that influence the outcomes. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 49 patients below the age of 18 years who underwent hiatal hernia repair at the Asan Medical Center between 2006 and 2021. We analyzed and compared the general characteristics and surgical outcomes based on the presence of recurrence and coexisting congenital diseases. Results: Hiatal hernia progression was found to be associated with various medical conditions; however, no significant differences in patient characteristics or surgical outcomes between those with and without comorbidities were observed. There were no significant differences in patient characteristics or outcomes between the initial and redo operations. Fundoplication was performed in 19 patients (36.7%) during the initial operation and in 7 patients (87.5%) during repeat hiatal hernia repair. Conclusion: The presence of an underlying disease didn't influence the treatment and progression of hiatal hernia. Furthermore, there were no significant differences in the clinical course between patients with recurrent hiatal hernia and those experiencing it for the first time. Additionally, the impact of fundoplication on the recurrence of hiatal hernia in pediatric patients was found to be minimal.

OBJECTIVE: The addition of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs), pembrolizumab or dostarlimab, to paclitaxel and carboplatin (TC) has shown better response rates and survival outcomes for patients with primary advanced mismatch repair-deficient (MMRd) endometrial cancer (EC) in NRG-GY018 and RUBY, respectively. Nonetheless, the high cost of ICIs remains a major concern when implementing this strategy in the real world. This study aimed to determine the cost-effectiveness of pembrolizumab and dostarlimab with chemotherapy compared to TC for primary advanced MMRd EC. METHODS: We developed a Markov model including 6600 patients with primary advanced MMRd EC to simulate treatment outcomes. The initial decision points in the model were treatment with pembrolizumab with TC (PEM-TC), dostarlimab with TC (DOS-TC), and TC. Model probabilities, costs, and health utility values were derived with assumptions from published literature. Effectiveness was determined as average quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) gained. The primary outcome was the incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER). RESULTS: TC was the least costly strategy, whereas PEM-TC was the most effective strategy for primary advanced MMRd EC. TC was cost-effective based on a willingness-to-pay (WTP) threshold of $100,000/QALY compared with PEM-TC (ICER, $377,718/QALY), and DOS-TC exhibited absolute dominance (ICER, $401,859/QALY). PEM-TC was cost-effective when the cost of pembrolizumab 200 mg was reduced to $4361 (61% reduction). PEM-TC was selected in 16.5% with a WTP threshold of $300,000/QALY, but in <1% with a WTP threshold range of $100,000-200,000/QALY. CONCLUSION: PEM-TC can become cost-effective for primary advanced MMRd EC when the cost of pembrolizumab substantially decreases.

OBJECTIVE: Our study aimed to evaluate the incidence of pathological findings in asymptomatic Korean patients with BRCA1/2 pathogenic variants who underwent risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy and to assess their long-term prognosis. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the medical records of patients with a germinal BRCA1/2 pathologic variant who had undergone risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy at Asan Medical Center (Seoul, Korea) between January 2013 and December 2020. All pathologic reports were made based on the sectioning and extensively examining the fimbriated end of the fallopian tube (SEE/FIM) protocol. RESULTS: Out of 243 patients who underwent risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy, 121 (49.8%) had a BRCA1 mutation, 119 (48.9%) had a BRCA2 mutation, and three (1.2%) had both mutations. During the procedure, four (3.3%) patients with a BRCA1 mutation were diagnosed with serous tubal intraepithelial carcinoma (STIC) or serous tubal intraepithelial lesion (STIL), and another four patients (3.3%) were diagnosed with occult cancer despite no evidence of malignancy on preoperative ultrasound. In the BRCA2 mutation group, we found one (0.8%) case of STIC, but no cases of STIL or occult cancer. During the median follow-up period of 98 months (range, 44-104) for STIC and 54 months (range, 52-56) for STIL, none of the patients diagnosed with these precursor lesions developed primary peritoneal carcinomatosis. CONCLUSIONS: Risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy, in asymptomatic Korean patients with BRCA1/2 pathogenic variants, detected ovarian cancer and precursor lesions, including STIC or STIL. Furthermore, our follow-up period did not reveal any instances of primary peritoneal carcinomatosis, suggesting a limited body of evidence supporting the imperative need for adjuvant treatment in patients diagnosed with these precursor lesions during risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy.

OBJECTIVE: High-grade neuroendocrine cervical cancer (HGNECC) is a rare and aggressive cervical cancer subtype. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the prognostic value of fluorodeoxyglucose-PET/computed tomography (CT) parameters for HGNECC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This single-center retrospective study included 29 patients with HGNECC who underwent fluorodeoxyglucose-PET/CT scan followed by surgery between 2006 and 2016. RESULTS: The median follow-up period was 40 (range, 4-184) months. After surgery, the resection margins were tumor-negative in 28 patients (96.6%), 8 (27.6%) patients had parametrial tumor invasion, and 7 patients (24.1%) tested positive for lymph node metastasis. The tumor recurred in 20 patients (69%) and 18 patients (62.1%) died during the observation period. In the univariate analyses, age and total lesion glycolysis (TLG) were associated with worse disease-free survival (DFS) (age, hazard ratio 1.056, 95% CI 1.014-1.100, P  = 0.009; TLG2.5, hazard ratio 1.003, 95% CI 1-1.006, P  = 0.033; and TLG3.0, hazard ratio 1.003, 95% CI 1-1.006, P  = 0.034). In the multivariate analyses, older age and higher TLG3.0 were identified as independent poor prognostic factors for DFS (age, hazard ratio 1.058, 95% CI 1.014-1.104, P  = 0.009; TLG3.0, hazard ratio 1.004, 95% CI 1-1.007, P  = 0.033), while resection margin involvement was identified as an independent factor to predict poor overall survival (hazard ratio 20.717, 95% CI 1.289-332.964, P  = 0.032). CONCLUSION: Among the preoperative fluorodeoxyglucose-PET/CT parameters, TLG3.0 may be useful for predicting DFS in patients with HGNECC.

OBJECTIVE: Extramammary Paget's disease (EMPD) of the vulva is a rare disease which predominantly presents in postmenopausal Caucasian women. As yet, no studies on Asian female patients with EMPD have been performed. This study aimed to identify the clinical features of patients with vulvar EMPD in Korea, and to evaluate the risk factors of recurrence and postoperative complications in surgically treated EMPD. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 47 patients with vulvar EMPD who underwent wide local excision or radical vulvectomy. The clinical data and surgical and oncological outcomes following surgery were extracted from medical records and analyzed. Univariate and multivariate analyses for predicting recurrence and postoperative complications were performed. RESULTS: 21.3% of patients had complications after surgery, and wound dehiscence was the most common. 14.9% of patients experienced recurrence, and the median interval to recurrence from initial treatment was 69 (range 33-169) months. Vulvar lesions larger than 40 mm was the independent risk factor of postoperative complications (odds ratio [OR]=7.259; 95% confidence interval [CI]=1.545-34.100; p=0.012). Surgical margin status was not associated with recurrence in surgically treated vulvar EMPD patients (OR=0.83; 95% CI=0.16-4.19; p=1.000). CONCLUSION: Positive surgical margin is a frequent finding in the patients with vulvar EMPD, but disease recurrence is not related with surgical margin status. Since EMPD is a slow growing tumor, a surveillance period longer than 5 years is required.

Purpose: Although surgical management of Hirschsprung disease (HD) is effective in most patients, some patients experience long-term postoperative complications, and require redo pull-through (PT). The present study evaluated clinical outcomes of redo PT in HD patients at a single center. Methods: Patients with HD who underwent redo PT procedures between 2003 and 2019 were retrospectively reviewed. Results: Thirteen patients were included. Five (38.5%) had undergone initial PT surgery at our center and 8 (61.5%) at other centers. Redo PT procedures were transanal endorectal PT in 12 patients (92.3%) and the posterior sagittal approach in 1 patient (7.7%). Indications for redo PT included pathologic misdiagnosis in 8 patients (61.5%); stricture in 2 (15.4%); and rectal stenosis, obstructing Duhamel pouch and remnant septum in 1 each (7.7%). At a median follow-up of 68 months (range, 3-227 months) after redo PT, 8 patients (61.5%) had normal bowel function, 2 (15.4%) had incontinence, and 1 (7.7%) had constipation. Conclusion: Redo PT procedures could be an effective approach for improving obstructive symptoms in HD patients with anatomic or pathologic reasons following primary PT. Careful selection of patients and discreet indications for redo PT are crucial.

We evaluated the clinical outcomes of using type 1 collagen gel after therapeutic resectoscopy; overall, 150 women aged > 20 who planned to undergo therapeutic resectoscopy were enrolled. The patients were randomly assigned to either of the anti-adhesive treatment groups: the type 1 collagen gel (Collabarrier®) (study group; N = 75) or the sodium hyaluronate and sodium carboxymethylcellulose gel group (control group; N = 75) after resectoscopy. One month after applying anti-adhesive materials, postoperative intrauterine adhesions were evaluated using second-look hysteroscopy; the incidence rate of postoperative intrauterine adhesions examined through second-look hysteroscopy showed no significant differences between the groups. There were no statistical differences between the frequency and mean scores of the type and intensity of adhesions in both groups. Finally, no significant differences in adverse events, serious adverse events, adverse device effects, and serious adverse device effects were noted between the two groups; type 1 collagen gel can be effectively and safely used in intrauterine surgery to minimize postoperative adhesions, thereby eventually decreasing the prevalence of infertility, secondary amenorrhea, and recurrent pregnancy loss in reproductive women.

Purpose: We analyzed the timing of inguinal hernia repair in premature infants in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) considering recurrence, incarceration, and other complications. Methods: In this multicenter retrospective review, premature infants (<37 weeks) in the NICU diagnosed with inguinal hernia between 2017 and 2021 were segregated into 2 groups based on the timing of inguinal hernia repair. Results: Of 149 patients, 109 (73.2%) underwent inguinal hernia repair in the NICU and 40 (26.8%) after discharge. Preoperative incarceration did not differ, but complications with recurrence and postoperative respiratory insufficiency were higher in the NICU group (11.0% vs. 0%, P = 0.029; 22.0% vs. 5.0%, P = 0.01). Multivariate analysis showed that the significant factors affecting recurrence were preoperative ventilator dependence and body weight of <3,000 g at the time of surgery (odds ratio [OR], 16.89; 95% confidence interval [CI], 3.45-82.69; P < 0.01 and OR, 9.97; 95% CI, 1.03-95.92; P = 0.04). Conclusion: Our results suggest that when premature infants are diagnosed with inguinal hernia in the NICU, inguinal hernia repair after discharge may decrease the odds of recurrence and postoperative respiratory insufficiency. In patients who have difficulty delaying surgery, it is thought that surgery should be performed carefully in a ventilator preoperatively or weighed <3,000 g at the time of surgery.

To avoid the adverse consequences from abrupt increases in blood glucose, diabetic inpatients should be closely monitored. Using blood glucose data from type 2 diabetes patients, we propose a deep learning model-based framework to forecast blood glucose levels. We used continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) data collected from inpatients with type 2 diabetes for a week. We adopted the Transformer model, commonly used in sequence data, to forecast the blood glucose level over time and detect hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia in advance. We expected the attention mechanism in Transformer to reveal a hint of hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia, and performed a comparative study to determine whether Transformer was effective in the classification and regression of glucose. Hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia rarely occur and this results in an imbalance in the classification. We built a data augmentation model using the generative adversarial network. Our contributions are as follows. First, we developed a deep learning framework utilizing the encoder part of Transformer to perform the regression and classification under a unified framework. Second, we adopted a data augmentation model using the generative adversarial network suitable for time-series data to solve the data imbalance problem and to improve performance. Third, we collected data for type 2 diabetic inpatients for mid-time. Finally, we incorporated transfer learning to improve the performance of regression and classification.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the impact of conization on survival outcomes and to identify a specific population that might benefit from conization before radical hysterectomy (RH) in patients with early-stage cervical cancer. METHODS: From six institutions in Korea, we identified node-negative, margin-negative, parametria-negative, 2009 FIGO stage IB1 cervical cancer patients who underwent primary type C RH between 2006 and 2021. The patients were divided into multiple groups based on tumor size, surgical approach, and histology. We performed a series of independent 1:1 propensity score matching and compared the survival outcomes between the conization and non-conization groups. RESULTS: In total, 1254 patients were included: conization (n = 355) and non-conization (n = 899). Among the matched patients with a tumor size of >2 cm, the conization group showed a significantly better 3-year disease-free survival (DFS) rate compared with the non-conization group when RH was conducted via minimally invasive surgery (MIS), in those with squamous cell carcinoma (96.3% vs. 87.4%, P = 0.007) and non-squamous cell carcinoma (97.0% vs. 74.8%, P = 0.021). However, no difference in DFS was observed between the two groups among the matched patients with a tumor size of ≤2 cm, regardless of surgical approach or histological type. In patients who underwent MIS RH, DFS significantly worsened as the residual tumor size increased (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Cervical conization was associated with a lower recurrence rate in patients with early-stage cervical cancer with a tumor size of >2 cm who underwent primary MIS RH. Cervical conization may be performed prior to MIS RH to minimize the uterine residual tumor.

BACKGROUND: Lettuce is one of the most extensively farmed vegetables in the world, and it prefers cool growing conditions. High temperatures promote premature bolt formation, reducing quality and yield. The gibberellic acid-stimulated Arabidopsis (GASA) family genes play critical roles in plant growth, development, and stress responses. However, the biological functions of GASA proteins in lettuce have yet to be thoroughly investigated. RESULTS: Using genome-wide analysis, 20 GASAs were identified in lettuce including, three groups of LsGASA proteins based on the phylogenetic analysis. Except for one, all GASA proteins included a conserved GASA domain with 12 cysteine residues. Cis-element analysis showed that LsGASAs were closely associated with light, phytohormones, and stress resistance. Five segmental and three tandem duplication events were observed in the LsGASA family based on duplication analysis. GASA synteny analysis among lettuce, Arabidopsis, tobacco, and rice revealed that LsGASA5 is highly collinear with all species. Six of the 20 LsGASA showed increased expression patterns at specific time points in the shoot apical meristem when subjected to heat stress. According to gene expression analysis, the majority of GASA were highly expressed in flowers compared to other organs, and six GASA exhibited highly increased expression levels in response to NaCl, abscisic acid, and gibberellin treatment. Furthermore, LsGASA proteins are predominantly found in the plasma membrane and/or the cytosol. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides a comprehensive characterization of LsGASA genes for their diversity and biological functions. Moreover, our results will be useful for further studies on the function of lettuce GASA in abiotic stress- and heat-induced bolting signaling.
